Bad Piggies is a puzzle video game developed and published by Rovio Entertainment. A spin-off of the Angry Birds series, it was released for mobile devices and PC in September 2012. Unlike previous entries, the game follows the pigs, specifically a Minion Pig named Ross, with King Pig and the Mechanic Pig also being recurrent characters. The gameplay consists of the player building vehicles to carry Ross to his destinations.

On August 27, 2012, the Bad Piggies made their own Facebook and Twitter accounts and started teasing the readers that they have plans to soon reveal something. On August 30, Rovio posted a video on their YouTube featuring Red on a featureless white background, with pigs falling on top of him and the supertitle "Something PIG is coming" appearing on the screen. After eight days of secrecy, on September 4, Rovio unveiled it: a new game in which the pigs are the stars. On September 17, Yahoo! Games has revealed the gameplay for the game.

The main point is that the player builds vehicles (cars, planes, etc.) out of various materials (wood, metal, etc.) and puts Ross to ride them and tries to collect things such as stars. The following day, the TV show X-Play made a preview of the game showing more of the game. On September 27, the game was released on iOS, Android, and Macintosh, with PC releasing later the same day.

Bad Piggies is free on Google Play, was $2.99 for iPad (HD), and was $0.99 for iPhone though it later became free on iPad and iPhone in 2016.

Updates

Toons.TV was added to the game during the Halloween update. Features in the game added through updates include Hidden Loot Crates, Custom Parts to customize vehicles, Skulls that the player can find throughout the game, and most recently, the Cake Race, where the player can race with other players in real-time.

Plot

In the Ground Hog Day episode, Ross, the Mechanic Pig, and King Pig find a construction kit with a telescope, with which they locate the eggs. They make a map to reach them but it is shattered by a fan. After collecting the scattered pieces and reaching their destination, however, the trio finds no trace of the eggs there. In the When Pigs Fly episode, they locate the eggs again using a telescope and make a map out of a TNT box. However, the TNT detonates, scattering the pieces again. They eventually find out that the eggs were just painted over the telescope by the Blues, enraging King Pig. Then, in the Flight in the Night episode, the trio steals one of the eggs while the Angry Birds sleep, and King Pig suggests building vehicles to scort it to safety. In the morning, however, they discover that the egg was just a stone painted white by the Blues, again infuriating King Pig.

In the Rise and Swine episode, Ross and the Mechanic Pig crash into Chef Pig's cake for King Pig, scattering its pieces. They rebuild the cake and give it to King Pig. In the Tusk 'til Dawn episode, Ross has a nightmare where he falls asleep after trick-or-treating and encounters zombies. In the Road to El Porkado episode, Ross goes on an adventure to find a golden pig statue and brings it to Pig City for King Pig.

Gameplay

Bad Piggies is a puzzle video game where the player needs to build a contraption in a grid-based system to carry Ross to the end of the level. A variety of materials is provided every time, including wooden and metal frames, engines, wheels, TNT, balloons, etc. All parts can break apart from the vehicle upon impact, with some being more resistant to collisions and heavier than others. A star is provided for getting Ross to the goal; optional second and third stars can be obtained by beating the level with certain conditions, like collecting a star box, not using a certain part, and reaching the end within a time limit. Unlike the Angry Birds games, Bad Piggies allows the player to get each star individually, meaning it is not required to get them all in one go. The player may also use Power-Ups to obtain difficult stars.

In addition to the main story levels, Bad Piggies features sandbox levels. These are more open-ended than their counterparts, providing a larger grid and many more materials to use. The objective of the sandbox levels is to collect the star boxes scattered throughout. As the player progresses through the game, more items are made available in the sandboxes. Most main episodes have two sandbox levels; two standalone levels, Find the Skulls and Find the Statues, are unlocked upon collecting the respectible collectibles in the main episodes. Little Pig Adventure and Field of Dreams are the largest sandbox levels and have 40 star boxes each; they are respectively unlocked through an in-game currency and an in-app purchase.

Later updates introduced Hidden Loot Crates, which award the player items, Power-Ups, and customizeable skins for parts. The player may also collect cakes in the levels and feed them to King Pig for a chance to earn similar items. Items known as scraps can be used to unlock a random customized part. Most customizations are purely cosmetic and are divided into three degrees based on their rarity; upon collecting all of the main parts, the player is able to obtain special "alien" parts which change the way parts behave and are much stronger than their counterparts.

Dessert Mode

Dessert Mode is an extra mode where the player needs to feed King Pig with cakes they find throughout the game. After eating some food, King Pig will burp and, sometimes, grant the player a random item.

Cake Race

Cake Race is an extra mode where the player competes against another player in a random map. There, both opponents have to build a vehicle to collect five cakes to get enough points and win. The amount of points the player is granted after collecting a cake depends on their level and whether or not they collected it first. The player who gets the most amount of points is the winner, regardless of whether they collected all five cakes or not.

In promotion of the game, there was a web comic released by Rovio in the Bad Piggies website. In it, Ross tries to build a boogie, only for it to be destroyed. However, Foreman Pig comes in and helps him build an even better vehicle.

Bad Piggies Free

Bad Piggies 2 is an upcoming game in the Angry Birds franchise and the sequel to Bad Piggies. The game was announced through ads on TikTok during mid 2021, which led to a GeekLab page emulating the Google Play Store, and a survey asking the viewer questions about the game, most notably what art style the game should use: the art style used in the first Bad Piggies, the art style of Angry Birds Toons, and an art style similar to the one used in the Angry Birds films and media related to them. The game is currently being developed in the Stockholm studio located in Sweden.

Trivia

This is the third game in the Angry Birds series to feature the pigs' new design since the first version, the first being Angry Birds Chrome and the second being Angry Birds Space.

This is also the only game still up to use the Chrome design for the pigs and birds instead of the designs from Angry Birds Friends or Toons.

There are three versions of the Bad Piggies theme.

The first version is the piano version which has the piano playing the main melody. Ross can also be heard laughing. This played in the title screen before the 1.4 update.

The second version replaced the piano with a banjo and starts much later than the other two versions, Ross is no longer heard in the song. This played in all levels before the 1.5 update, and in 1.4, it is also used as the title theme. This was likely a beta version that was left in by accident, supported by the fact that it's name in the game files is "action_test_1".

The third version replaced the last two in the 1.5 update and is much shorter cutting off right before the part where the vehicle horn sounds are heard. This version still has the banjo from the second version but starts at the same time the piano version started. Ross is once again absent from the whole song.

According to Rovio, Ross has a real name, however, they said that one "would not be able to pronounce it".[引用 需要]

This is the first game to depict the birds in non-playable roles.

Leonard and his consort appear in Dessert Mode as portraits beside King Pig's throne, in the Pig Palace.

This is the first Angry Birds game to not include the aforementioned name in its title, Agri Birds and Flip the Bird are the only Angry Birds games not to have the words Angry Birds in its title.

This is also the only spin-off game to not have the word Bird in its title.

In 2011, the website domain badpiggies.com was a pig adoption site. It is now a redirect to the 404 page on the official Angry Birds website.[引用 需要]

This is the earliest Angry Birds game to still be available on Apple's App Store and Google Play.

It was originally discontinued alongside the other legacy titles in 2019, but was reinstated in early 2020. The HD version also remained available but was discontinued on August 20, 2023.

The old "HD" text in a blue circle from the old HD version app icon still appears in the main menu of the HD version. However, as of late-2022, the old HD icon from 2012 came back as the current icon.

Despite her not appearing in this game, Matilda's aiming vocal effect is used for all of the birds.

On June 13, 2013, it was reported by F-Secure that a malicious app disguised as Bad Pigs with 10,000 downloads was removed from the Google Play store.[13]

The app icon closely resembles the original Angry Birds game, albeit depicting Ross instead of Red and the background is orange instead of blue.

Bad Piggies and Angry Birds Stella are the only games to not focus on the main flock.
